Petersfield Town manager looking forward to facing former side

HE DOESN’T look anything like Corporal Jones from Dad’s Army but Petersfield Town manager Jim Macey is keen to ensure his famous catchphrase can be heard ringing through the Rams’ camp right now.

‘Don’t panic’ were the famous words uttered by Clive Dunn’s character in the popular BBC television series.

Now Macey is keen for everyone at Love Lane to relax into the season and not let their three game losing streak at the start of the campaign cause any panic or concern in the playing ranks.

League defeats at the hands of Baffins Milton Rovers and Fareham Town and an early FA Cup exit to Thatcham Town during the opening week of 2017-18 all too easily rekindle painful memories of the club’s Southern League struggles of last season.

But Macey is no ‘stupid boy’ when it comes to preparing teams for the rigours of a Wessex League Premier Division campaign and he believes the hard work put in and difficult results experienced now will all be to the benefit of the club eventually.

“I knew when taking this job it would be tough,” reflected Macey ahead of his side’s game against his former club Amesbury Town at Love Lane this Saturday.

“I feel two league games in everyone needs not to panic – there is a long way to go and we have much work to do to turn the situation around.

“We know we haven’t started as I would have liked so far this season but with a few more additions we are working hard to get in and the lads we have at the club we are definitely hoping to turn things around.

“With hard work and trusting some of the young players to learn quickly this can happen.”

Macey is enjoying the weekend reunions with his old clubs at the moment – last Saturday brought a trip to surroundings familiar to him from his time managing Thatcham Town and he has very fond memories of Amesbury, who he guided to promotion from Wessex Division 1.

The Rams boss added: “I’m looking forward to seeing their manager Gareth and his dad Nick, along with a lot of my old players.

“I am looking forward to a good game of football on Saturday against a talented Amesbury side with plenty of pace.”
